Maximum trap arm length for a 3 inch trap and pipe
How far a 3 inch trap that is not a toilet can sit from its vent depends on which plumbing code your area uses: 12 ft under the IPC / IRC, 6 ft under the UPC, with a trap arm of the same size laid at the table slope. A toilet is not on these tables: under the UPC its vent must be within 6 ft of the closet flange, and the IPC / IRC table does not limit it. Pick the fixture and your code below and enter your own distance.
- IPC / IRC maximum for a 3 in trap, trap weir to vent fitting (2021 IRC Table P3105.1 / 2021 IPC Table 909.1)
- 12 ft
- UPC maximum for a 3 in trap arm, trap weir to inner edge of the vent (2024 UPC Table 1002.2)
- 6 ft
- UPC, toilet (water closet) instead: face of the closet flange to the inner edge of the vent (2024 UPC Table 1002.2, Note 2)
- 6 ft
- IPC / IRC, toilet (water closet) instead (exception to 2021 IRC P3105.1 / IPC 909.1)
- not limited by the table
- IPC / IRC: slope in the table, and the fall over 12 ft at that slope
- 1/8 in per ft, 1 1/2 in
- UPC: slope in the table note, and the fall over 6 ft at that slope
- 1/4 in per ft, 1 1/2 in
- IPC / IRC: closest the vent may be to the trap weir (two pipe diameters)
- 6 in
- UPC: shortest trap arm allowed (table minimum)
- 6 in
These are two different tables, not a range: use the row for the code your area has adopted. The rows are for a 3 in trap with a trap arm of the same size, laid at the slope shown. A toilet (water closet) is under a separate rule in both codes, shown above; do not use the trap rows for one. Editions: 2021 IPC / IRC and 2024 UPC. Local amendments govern.
