How many steps for a 108 inch rise
A 108 inch total rise needs at least 14 risers, each 7.7143 in high, with 13 treads on the stringer. Change the numbers below for your own stair.
- Risers (fewest that stay within 7 3/4 in)
- 14
- Riser height, exact: 108 ÷ 14 (≈ 7 11/16 in on the tape)
- 7.7143 in
- Treads on the stringer
- 13
- Total run at the minimum 10 in tread
- 130 in (10 ft 10 in)
2021 IRC Section R311.7.5, straight stair, total rise measured between finished floors. The upper floor is the last step, so there is one tread fewer than there are risers. Total run is from the face of the first riser to the face the stair lands against. Worked with a 1 in nosing on the treads (treads with no nosing fail at this run), and assuming the edge of the upper floor overhangs the top riser by the same amount. Do not step off the rounded riser height: mark the stringer from the mark-out table below. Local amendments govern.
