Linear is a brand of Nortek Security & Control LLC. They're particularly popular in commercial applications like apartment complexes, gated communities, and businesses. Linear gate openers are very common at apartment entrances.

Understanding Linear Technologies

Mega Code (Rolling Code)

Mega Code is Linear's rolling code technology. Each Mega Code remote has a unique factory-set code that cannot be changed or duplicated. When you program a Mega Code remote, the receiver "learns" the remote's unique code. Each time you press the button, a new rolling code is transmitted.

Mega Code remotes operate at 390MHz and are the most common Linear technology in residential applications.

Delta 3 (Fixed Code)

Delta 3 is an older Linear technology using fixed codes. The remote transmits the same code every time. Delta 3 operates at 310MHz. To program Delta 3 remotes, you press the learn button on the receiver 3 times, then press the remote button.

Dip Switch (Legacy)

Very old Linear openers use dip switches for code setting. You manually set a pattern of switches to match the receiver. This provides minimal security as the code can be copied.

Linear Receiver Location

Unlike Chamberlain/LiftMaster where the learn button is on the motor unit, Linear openers often have a separate receiver box. Look for:

• A small plastic box mounted near the garage ceiling
• An antenna wire hanging from the box
• A learn button (may be small and recessed)
• LED indicator light

In some newer Linear models, the receiver is integrated into the motor unit. Look for a small antenna wire on the side of the motor housing.

Common Linear Remote Problems

Problem: Can't find the learn button
Solution: Linear receivers are often separate boxes from the motor. Look for a small box with an antenna near the ceiling. The learn button may be recessed - use a pen or paperclip to press it.

Problem: Remote programs but doesn't work
Solution: You may have programmed to a different receiver. Some garages have multiple Linear receivers (one for door, one for gate). Make sure you're programming to the correct receiver.

Problem: Linear gate opener won't program
Solution: Gate openers often have separate receivers. Check if the gate uses Mega Code or Delta 3. The programming steps differ - Mega Code is one button press, Delta 3 is three button presses.

Problem: Only one remote works with apartment gate
Solution: Property managers often limit gate remotes to one per unit. Contact property management to add a second remote, or use a clone remote (copies existing remote code).

MultiCode is a brand of universal remotes that work with Linear Mega Code receivers. If you need a replacement Linear remote, MultiCode is a popular option. They're available in 1, 2, 4, and 8-button versions.

Linear for Gates

Linear is extremely popular for gate openers in apartments and communities. If you're programming to a gate:

• Find the gate receiver box (usually near the gate motor)
• Check if it's Mega Code or Delta 3
• Property managers may need to authorize new remotes
• Gate remotes often have shorter range than door remotes
