LiftMaster vs Chamberlain - What's the Difference?

LiftMaster is the "professional" line sold through dealers, while Chamberlain is the "consumer" line sold at retail stores. They're both owned by The Chamberlain Group and use identical technology. A Chamberlain remote works with a LiftMaster opener and vice versa.

Identifying Your LiftMaster Opener Technology

LiftMaster has used several rolling code technologies over the years. The LEARN button color is your key to identifying which type you have:

Security+ 2.0 (Yellow Learn Button)

LiftMaster openers with yellow LEARN buttons use Security+ 2.0 rolling code technology. This is found on most models manufactured after 2011, including all myQ-enabled openers.

Programming: Press and release the yellow button. Within 30 seconds, press your universal remote button. Some models require a second press to activate.

Security+ (Purple/Orange/Red Learn Button)

LiftMaster openers from roughly 2005-2011 use Security+ technology. Purple, orange, or red LEARN buttons all indicate Security+ rolling code (different colors for different production runs).

myQ Technology

Most modern LiftMaster openers include myQ smart home connectivity. You can control your garage door from your phone. myQ uses a separate gateway that connects to your home WiFi. Programming remote controls to myQ openers works the same way as standard LiftMaster openers.

Common LiftMaster Remote Problems

Problem: Remote programs but door doesn't move
Solution: The Lock feature may be enabled. Press and hold the lock button on your wall control panel for 3 seconds to disable it. You'll hear a beep confirming the toggle.

Problem: MyQ works but remote doesn't
Solution: This is common. The myQ gateway receives commands but the remote frequency isn't being received. Check the antenna wire on the motor unit. Reprogram the remote using the LEARN button.

Problem: LED won't light when pressing LEARN button
Solution: No power to the logic board. Check the outlet. If the motor runs but the LED doesn't light, the logic board may have failed and needs replacement.

Problem: Remote works from close range but not far away
Solution: Antenna wire is damaged or missing. LED light interference is also common - try testing with garage lights off. Replace remote battery.

LiftMaster Professional Series

The LiftMaster Professional Series is sold through garage door dealers. These openers are built with heavier-duty components and often include extended warranties. Programming remotes to Professional Series openers is identical to consumer models.

Using Universal Remotes with LiftMaster

Universal garage door remotes cost $15-25 and work with all LiftMaster models. They support multiple frequencies (315MHz, 390MHz) and can often control 2 different garage doors. Most include easy-to-follow instructions for LiftMaster programming.

When buying a universal remote, verify it lists "LiftMaster" or "Chamberlain" compatibility. Avoid "fixed code" only remotes - LiftMaster has used rolling codes since the 1990s.
