Quick Programming Steps

For Intellicode Models (Most Genies since 1996)

  1. Locate the learn button on the Genie power head (usually circular button)
  2. Press and release the learn button. The red LED will blink once
  3. Within 30 seconds, press the remote button 3 times (press-press-press)
  4. Wait - the opener light will blink or you'll hear clicks
  5. Test the remote - press the button to verify

For Dip Switch Models (Older Genies)

  1. Open the battery cover on your existing working Genie remote
  2. Note the dip switch positions (usually 12 switches in a row)
  3. Match the pattern on your universal remote's dip switches
  4. Set the frequency to 390MHz on the universal remote
  5. Test the remote

Understanding Genie Intellicode

Genie introduced Intellicode rolling code technology in 1996. Unlike fixed codes that could be grabbed and replayed, Intellicode generates a new code each time you press the remote. The opener and remote stay synchronized using a mathematical algorithm.

Each Genie opener can store up to 7 Intellicode remotes. When you program the 8th remote, the oldest code is automatically erased.

Identifying Your Genie Opener Type

Intellicode Models (1996-present): Look for a circular learn button on the power head. There may be an "Intellicode" logo on the motor unit. These use rolling codes.

Dip Switch Models (pre-1996): Open the remote or look at the power head. If you see a row of small toggle switches, you have a dip switch model. These use fixed codes.

Programming Intellicode Remotes

The Genie Intellicode programming process is unique because it requires pressing the remote button THREE times:

  1. Press the learn button on the motor unit once (red LED blinks)
  2. Press remote button once (nothing happens - this sends initial code)
  3. Press remote button again after 1 second (sends second code)
  4. Press remote button a third time after 1 second (completes programming)
  5. The opener light blinks to confirm

Programming Dip Switch Remotes

For older Genie openers with dip switches, programming is manual. Open your existing remote and note which switches are up (+) and which are down (-). Match this exact pattern on your universal remote.

If you don't have a working remote, the dip switch settings are also printed on a sticker inside the lens cover of the motor unit.

Common Genie Remote Problems

Problem: Remote stopped working after battery change
Solution: Genie Intellicode remotes can lose sync if the battery is removed for more than 30 seconds. Reprogram the remote by pressing the learn button and then the remote button 3 times.

Problem: Universal remote won't program
Solution: Make sure the universal remote is set to Genie Intellicode mode (not Genie 9/12 dip switch mode). Some older universal remotes don't support Intellicode - you may need a newer model.

Problem: Only some remotes work
Solution: Genie memory is full (7 remotes maximum). Erase all codes by holding the learn button for 10 seconds until the LED stops blinking. Then reprogram your most-used remotes.

Problem: Door opens but won't close
Solution: This is usually the safety sensors, not the remote. Check if the green LED on the safety sensor is lit. Clean the sensor lenses and realign them.

Genie vs Other Brands

Genie uses proprietary Intellicode technology that is NOT compatible with Chamberlain, LiftMaster, or Craftsman. You cannot use a Chamberlain remote with a Genie opener and vice versa. Always use Genie-brand remotes or universal remotes that explicitly list Genie compatibility.

Universal Remotes for Genie

Universal remotes work with Genie openers but you must verify Genie compatibility on the package. Look for "Genie Intellicode" on the label. Some universal remotes only support Chamberlain/LiftMaster.
