Chamberlain has been manufacturing garage door openers since 1954. The brand is known for Security+ and Security+ 2.0 rolling code technology. To program a remote, you first need to identify which type of opener you have.
Most Chamberlain openers manufactured after 2011 use Security+ 2.0 technology with a yellow LEARN button. This is the most secure rolling code system and provides excellent protection against code grabbing devices.
Programming: Press and release the yellow button. Within 30 seconds, press your universal remote button twice - once to pair, once to activate. The opener light will blink to confirm.
Chamberlain openers from roughly 2005-2011 use Security+ technology with either a purple or orange LEARN button. These also use rolling codes but with an earlier encryption standard.
Programming: Press and release the colored button. Within 30 seconds, press and hold your remote button for 3-5 seconds until the opener light blinks.
Older Chamberlain models (pre-2005) may have a green LEARN button or use dip switch technology. These use fixed codes or early rolling code technology.
Problem: Remote programs but door doesn't move
Solution: Check if the Lock feature is engaged on your wall control. Press and hold the Lock button for 3 seconds to toggle it off.
Problem: LEARN button LED won't light up
Solution: Check power to the motor unit. Verify the outlet works. If the motor unit has no power at all, check GFCI outlets in the garage.
Problem: Remote works close up but not from driveway
Solution: Check the antenna wire hanging from the motor unit. Replace remote battery. Some LED lights can cause interference - try testing with garage lights off.
Problem: Remote stops working after a few days
Solution: The memory may be full. Chamberlain openers can store up to 8 remotes/keypads. You may need to erase all codes and reprogram your most-used devices.
Chamberlain, LiftMaster, and Craftsman are all owned by the same parent company (Chamberlain Group). Remotes and keypads are fully interchangeable between these brands. If you have a LiftMaster remote, it will work with your Chamberlain opener and vice versa.
Official Chamberlain remotes cost $40-60 at home improvement stores. Universal garage remotes cost $15-25 online and work with all Chamberlain models. The programming takes just a few minutes and anyone can do it - no tools required.
