Sightline and resultant for 14° rake and 7° splay
These are the leg angles of Christopher Schwarz's sawbench in Popular Woodworking. The pair is the two legs at one end of the bench, the end his article calls the front, so the baseline runs across the width of the bench. The article reads its figures off a bent-wire model, so they are approximate. Draw the sightline 63.8° from the baseline and set the bevel gauge 15.5° off square, so that its blade stands 15.5° from upright. The drawing opens on a front leg; change the numbers below for your own.
- Sightline, from the baseline
- 63.8°
- Resultant, bevel gauge off square
- 15.5°
- The same line, from the long edge
- 26.2°
On this bench the pair is the two legs at one end, the end the article calls the front, so the baseline runs across the width of the bench and the sightline opens toward the middle of the bench. Measured from the long edge the same line is 26.2°. The resultant is measured off square: a bevel gauge set to it has its blade that far from upright. Assumes a flat, level top.
