How many 2x2 balusters do I need
With balusters that measure 1 1/2 in across, a level section needs 9 for 4 ft, 13 for 6 ft, 17 for 8 ft between the posts to keep every gap safely under 4 in. Enter your own section below.
- Balusters for 4 ft (48 in) clear between posts, gaps of about 3 7/16 in (fewest with every gap under 4 in)
- 9
- Balusters for 6 ft (72 in) clear between posts, gaps of 3 3/4 in (fewest with every gap under 4 in)
- 13
- Balusters for 8 ft (96 in) clear between posts, gaps of about 3 15/16 in (fewest with every gap under 4 in)
- 17
- Widest centre to centre this tool uses (gap 1/16 in under the limit)
- 5 7/16 in
For balusters that measure 1 1/2 in, which is what the WoodCalc example listed under Sources on How it works takes a 2x2 to be. A baluster sold as 2x2 is usually not 2 in wide and may not be 1 1/2 in either: measure one, because a thinner baluster leaves wider gaps. Lengths are between the inside faces of the posts. 2021 IRC R312.1.3, level run only: balusters on a stair are not laid out by this tool. A gap equal to 4 in is treated as a fail, and the tool uses one more than the fewest on paper whenever the paper gap would be within 1/16 in of the limit, because two tape marks can open a gap by that much. Local amendments govern.
